Knee pain and Glucosamine

Author: Dr Mohan Sunil Kumar

Its a known fact that the life span of individuals are increasing, hence the geriatric health problems too. One of the commonest being osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis(OA) is a disease of the joint where in the friction between the adjoining surfaces are progressively increasing and result in pain, decreased mobility and ending up in significant disability.

Even though breakthroughs have been made, OA still remains out of complete clutches of doctors. Joint replacement has made significant inroads in OA treatment but off course burring holes in the purses of individuals as it remains still quite expensive. Along with this issue is the problems secondary to long term use of pain killers and there inability to reverse the disease process. These issues lead us to consider Glucosamine supplementation as important, natural and useful strategy for decreasing symptoms/distress associated with OA and associated probable reversibility of disease process to some extent, especially in the early stages.

Glucosamine is an Amino Sugar (glutamine and fructose), which is an important ingredient of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate, Which are important constituents of various parts of a joint. Its extracted from shellfish.
Its role in OA is by increasing hyaluronic acid secretion, formation of articular cartilage and hence relieving patients of there distress. Important findings are: (Even though there is a trend showing improvement, there is no conclusive evidence)

  1. Glucosamine better than galactosamine
  2. Glucosamine HCl probably better than sulphate
  3. Quite safe
  4. Liquid or softgel or capsule form better than solid tablet.
Currently evidence does not say that glucosamine is the treatment of choice for OA but it appears that it would definitely play an important role and worth a try before considering costly alternatives like joint replacement. Kindly "Do consult your physician if you intend to get on glucosamine".
